What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is a reasoning based, thought-driven tool

to achieve freedom in movement and an elevated quality in all types of performance.

Whether you are a musician, an actor, an elite athlete, lecturer,

business leader or anything else,

you are ”using” yourself in everything you do.

If you want to change something, e.g. develop your singing, your stage presence, or your ability to deliver at the critical moment

you will need to think in new ways about how you ”use” yourself and your body in the movements you make.

By studying

thinking in relation to movement

you can develop a mental discipline that you can apply in all areas of your life.

How would it be to get more done with less effort?

What to expect at a workshop

A workshop begins with an Introductory Lecture,

followed by experiential work where one student at a time has a ”lesson turn”.

The whole group follows each individual’s lesson

and together we discuss the questions and ideas that are investigated in the session.

An ITM teacher uses his or her hands when interacting with the student.

You can get a sense of what it looks like in the pictures above and below.

What I do with my hands is very non-invasive, and might be best described as a ”gentle touch”.

It has nothing to do with ”healing,” ”energies” or anything like that.

Instead, hands in teaching are used to demonstrate the ideas that are discussed

and everything is related to the thoughts and questions that the student brings into the lesson turn.

Using hands is one of many tools that an ITM teacher uses

to create interactions where the student is invited to reason through his or her ideas and beliefs concerning movement.

There are many approaches to the work of Frederick Matthias Alexander.

Like in any field or discipline there are different schools of thought.

Diversity of opinion is a sign of a health and contributes to the collective development in the field.

the approach in which I am certified,

This is what Charlie, ITM student since february this year, has to say

”I experience the Alexander Technique

as a tremendously enriching and eye-opening journey.

In everything you do, in all your movements,

there is one constant: You yourself.

The Alexander Technique challenges my thinking in a practical way

regarding how I apply myself during every movement I make,

whether that is singing, writing or simply sitting on a chair.

This way of thinking supports me in using less unnecessary effort,

whilst still successfully completing my every action,

leading me to preserve more energy

which I can then use to achieve even more.”
